Diversifying demand in a changing market
Global markets continue to shift, and creating new demand opportunities for Canadian pulses has never been more important. Pulse Canada is expanding its market development efforts in emerging regions, and a recent trade mission to Mexico marked an important step in that work.
The February 15–19 mission brought together hundreds of Canadian representatives from five sectors to engage directly with Mexican industry and build relationships with potential buyers. Federal and provincial leaders, including Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food Heath MacDonald and Minister for Canada–U.S. Trade Dominic LeBlanc, also participated, underscoring the importance of strengthening Canada’s trade ties in the region.

Introducing Canadian peas to key decision-makers
Pulse Canada used the mission to position Canadian peas with key players across Mexico’s feed, livestock, and pet food sectors. Denis Tremorin, Director of Sustainability with Pulse Canada, joined Mexican-Canadian animal nutritionist Gregorio Lanz to meet directly with national and regional industry associations, animal nutrition experts, and feed company representatives. These conversations helped increase awareness of Canadian peas and how they can support livestock and pet food production.
“Face-to-face engagement is essential to building trust and opening doors in new markets. This mission was an important step in strengthening relationships and showcasing the added value Canadian peas can bring to Mexico’s livestock and pet food sectors.”

Why Mexico matters
Mexico represents a major livestock market with significant feed demand. The country leads the world in egg production and consumption on a per-person basis, supported by a large and growing poultry and livestock sector.
Feed manufacturers and animal nutritionists are constantly evaluating ingredients that deliver performance, added value, and reliable supply. Canadian peas offer a strong fit, backed by Canada’s reputation as a dependable supplier of high-quality pulses.
Laying the groundwork for future demand
Demand does not shift overnight. It develops when buyers gain confidence in an ingredient and the suppliers behind it. Continued engagement will help ensure Canadian pulses are part of the conversation as companies evaluate ingredients and make sourcing decisions. That early positioning is critical to ensuring Canadian growers remain competitive as new markets develop.
