Canadian Peas Take Centre Stage at CLANA 2026 in Mexico

CLANA (XI Congreso Latinoamericano de Nutrición Animal) was an important place to make the case for Canadian peas. The congress is one of the region's leading animal nutrition events, drawing about 600 nutritionists, industry representatives and academics from across Mexico, Central America and South America. These are the people who decide which ingredients go into feed and pet food.

A strong Canadian presence

Pulse Canada had a significant presence at the congress, with a dedicated breakfast session, two technical presentations and support from Canadian government representatives.

The breakfast session, with 60 registrants, brought together major players in Mexico's livestock and pet food sectors. Sebastian Moffet, Consul General of Canada in Guadalajara, opened the session, underscoring Canada's commitment to the market.

Two presentations were delivered on behalf of Pulse Canada:

• Gregorio Lanz (Gowans Ltd.) introduced the Canadian pulse industry and made the case for peas in Mexican swine diets.

• Dr. Alex Rankovic presented opportunities for peas and pulse ingredients in pet food.

A roundtable moderated by Dr. Fernando Cisneros (Gowans Ltd.) then gave participants a chance to raise practical questions directly with the experts.

Continuing the conversation

Pulse Canada built on the breakfast with two technical sessions that afternoon, extending the discussion to a wider congress audience. Denis Tremorin, Pulse Canada's Director of Sustainability and Feed Market Development, spoke at a session on the sustainability of Mexico's livestock sector. He showed how feed formulation, including the use of peas, can help reduce the environmental impact of livestock production. This is a growing priority for the sector. Dr. Rankovic's pet nutrition presentation focused on peas and pea ingredients for pet food formulations, which drew strong interest and prompted many questions from attendees.

Why it matters

Bringing Canadian peas to decision-makers is the first step toward their use in formulations. Pulse Canada will next work with Dr. Gerardo Mariscal of Instituto Nacional de Investigaciones Forestales, Agrícolas y Pecuarias (INIFAP) on swine nutrition trials near Querétaro in 2027, generating local performance data that Mexican nutritionists can rely on. Together, these efforts position Canadian peas as a practical choice for one of the region's most important feed and pet food markets.
