  • To grow Canada’s pulse sector, ensuring that crops meet the highest standards in both domestic and international markets is vital. Keep it Clean – a joint initiative between Pulse Canada, the Canola Council of Canada, and Cereals Canada – is dedicated to supporting growers by providing them with helpful resources, best practices, and timely updates on what is happening in key markets. The 2024 campaign saw the introduction of new tactics as well as the continuation of some key touchpoints with growers. Here are some of the highlights:

    2024 Product Advisory & Webinar

The Keep it Clean Product Advisory kicked off the 2024 campaign – outlining specific crop-protection products that can create market risks on some crop types. Every year, associations update the Product Advisory to ensure that only the most accurate and timely information is communicated to growers. The webinar is geared toward growers, agronomists and others in the industry to communicate what is new and answer any questions those in the sector may have.

    Follow the Label

The Follow the Label campaign launched in June to remind growers to follow the product label directions for application rate, timing, and pre-harvest interval (PHI). In addition to communicating directly with growers, Keep it Clean advertises through various digital platforms, print outlets, and billboards. Through these channels we shared important messages, like ensuring grain moisture is less than 30% before applying pre-harvest glyphosate, and demonstrated helpful resources like the Pre-Harvest Interval Calculator. Keep it Clean also hosted a Pre-Harvest Webinar with in-house agronomy experts, so growers and agronomists can ask questions in real time.

New for 2024: Glufosinate Awareness

Pulse Canada and its members created a specific campaign for 2024 to remind growers that glufosinate should not be used on pulses, ever. Glufosinate is not registered for use on most pulse crops, and if used, there is an elevated risk of maximum residue limit (MRL) related trade disruption. This new campaign helped ensure growers were aware of the market risks associated with glufosinate on pulse crops, helping to keep important export markets open for business.

Updated: Pre-Harvest Interval Calculator

The PHI Calculator is one of our most useful tools for growers in the field. This year, we updated it to be even easier to use by adding search functions for active ingredients. You can take a look at the calculator here and be sure to check back for updates in 2025.

Keep it Clean Newsletter

To ensure our messages are having an impact, every two years Keep it Clean surveys hundreds of growers across Canada. This research told us that email is a preferred method to receive information, so this year we ramped up our email newsletters. These emails ensure growers get timely updates straight into their inbox and remind them of the resources available to them at the right time.

If you haven’t already, we encourage you to head over to keepitclean.ca and sign up for the newsletter so you can access resources and stay informed to protect your crops and uphold Canada’s reputation for excellence in pulse production. We are always looking for grower feedback on how to improve this initiative and encourage you to contact us with your ideas.

For 2025, growers can expect to hear important and timely information throughout the season that will help keep Canada’s exports market open and its reputation the envy of our competitors.
